During graduate school at the Laguna College of Art and Design, Shay Bredimus formed a friendship with groundskeeper Gus Green while living out of his Honda Civic and spending much of his time on campus. Green gave him a collection of simple black frames that the artist preserved for many years.

 

Gus’ Chop Shop brings those frames into dialogue with 15 years of Bredimus’s brush drawings—monochromatic works made by layering wet and dry media across both sides of translucent drafting film. Marking an intentional departure from this practice, the exhibition reframes, crops, and recomposes earlier works to isolate their most essential gestures.

 

Akin to sampling in music, this process transforms existing material through repetition, fragmentation, and recontextualization, allowing familiar images to acquire new formal and emotional resonance.
